The Emotional Well Being of Healthcare Workers Fighting COVID-19

Is anyone else concerned about the emotional toll on healthcare workers fighting COVID-19 day in and day out? I sure am!

The article below states “at a normal time, 50% of physicians are battling burnout, or emotional fatigue caused by work related stress.” Based on that, I’m sure that percentage has recently skyrocketed.

Before the virus hit, they were at least able to enjoy their social lives outside of work which would reduce stress and anxiety. I’m not a healthcare worker so I can’t say for sure but I’m guessing the pandemic has changed their social lives.

I’ve seen many acts of gratitude towards healthcare workers so I’m hoping that helps cheer them on. While I’ve been on walks throughout my neighborhood, I’ve seen signs that have been put up in yards that specifically thank the healthcare workers. I’ve also seen hearts in windows that are there to support healthcare workers. I, myself, cut out hearts and taped them up in my work window to remind me they are out there fighting the battle every day while I am safe in my home. I hope these acts of kindness help them in some way.

If you are a healthcare worker, can you tell us if these acts of kindness and gratitude help? If not, what does help? What tips can you give to other healthcare workers to help them cope during these stressful, uncertain times?
